But here's where it gets controversial... Loeb highlights anomalies observed by amateur astronomers. They captured images showing remarkably straight, million-kilometer-long jets extending from the object. These jets, strangely, are perpendicular to the Sun-object axis, not pointing away from the Sun as expected from a comet. Loeb suggests that if these features are genuine, they challenge conventional explanations. He even goes as far as to say that “Mother Nature was kinder to NASA than expected from a random delivery of rocks by at least a factor of 100,000 based on the two anomalies mentioned above.”
And this is the part most people miss... Loeb argues that NASA might be prematurely dismissing alternative explanations. He suggests that the object could potentially be a technological probe. He reminds us of the 'Trojan Horse' analogy, urging us not to judge a book by its cover. He even quotes Sherlock Holmes, emphasizing the importance of gathering data before forming theories.
Loeb offers two potential scenarios: a natural one involving fragments of ice or rock, or a technological one, involving "mini-probes released by a technological mothership." He's even urging NASA to examine data from Mars rovers and other sources to look for any related fragments.
Why Christmas? Loeb believes the coming weeks are crucial. Larger telescopes, including Hubble and Webb, will analyze the jets' composition and speed. These measurements could reveal whether the jets originate from natural ice pockets or technological thrusters. He predicts we'll have a clearer picture by the time 3I/ATLAS is closest to Earth on December 19, 2025.
