According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in the latest Power On newsletter, Apple isn’t stopping at emergency SOS and text messaging via satellite—features already available on recent iPhone models. Instead, the tech giant is rumored to be working on a suite of enhancements that could revolutionize how we stay connected in remote areas. But here’s where it gets controversial: while these advancements promise greater accessibility, they also raise questions about privacy, cost, and the digital divide. Will these features be affordable for everyone, or will they further widen the gap between tech haves and have-nots?
One of the most exciting updates is the potential to send photos via satellite. Last year, Apple introduced Messages via Satellite, allowing users to send and receive texts in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. Now, the ability to share images could be a game-changer for travelers, adventurers, or anyone in emergencies where visuals are critical. And this is the part most people miss: Apple is also reportedly planning to integrate satellite connectivity into Apple Maps, enabling users to get directions in remote areas—a feature that could save lives or simply make off-grid adventures less stressful.

Gurman suggests Apple is working on 'natural usage' enhancements, allowing iPhones to stay connected even indoors or without a clear view of the sky. Historically, Apple took two years to move from Emergency SOS via Satellite in 2022 to Messages via Satellite with iOS 18.
