Brexit's Impact: Popular Car Brands May Abandon Northern Ireland Market

That's the reality for car enthusiasts in Northern Ireland, as the post-Brexit trading rules are causing a stir in the automotive market. According to the National Franchised Dealership Association (NFDA), the Windsor Framework, designed to facilitate trade between Northern Ireland and Great Britain, is inadvertently causing a rift in the car market. The issue? New models from renowned brands like Vauxhall, Renault, Citroen, Peugeot, and Jaguar Land Rover may become off-limits for Northern Irish buyers.
Why? It's all about certifications. From 2024 onwards, new cars in Northern Ireland must have an 'EU type' approval, while the rest of the UK requires a 'GB type' certification. The catch? Some manufacturers are only opting for the GB certification, making their latest models incompatible with Northern Ireland's regulations.
And this is where it gets controversial. The NFDA warns that this situation poses a 'generational challenge', with higher costs and limited options for Northern Irish consumers. While the rest of the UK enjoys a wider selection, Northern Ireland faces a shrinking market. This disparity is already evident, with new car sales rising in Great Britain but declining in Northern Ireland.
A spokesperson from Charles Hurst, Jeff McCartney, sheds light on the issue: 'Vauxhall's retail sales in the UK are soaring, but in Northern Ireland, they're plummeting. The gap is widening, and it's a cause for concern.'
The NFDA's spokesperson, Alastair Peoples, emphasizes the urgency: 'The industry is facing critical challenges. Dealers are contemplating job cuts, and consumers are paying the price with reduced choices and higher costs.'
But there's a glimmer of hope. The government has assured that they are working to ensure manufacturers obtain dual approvals, promising no restrictions on car choices for Northern Ireland.
