Charlie Lindgren Injury: Capitals Goaltending Shakeup in NHL! (2026)

A major shake-up is coming for the Washington Capitals' goaltending tandem, with Charlie Lindgren facing an injury that could keep him out for at least a week. This unexpected development has forced the team to make some quick adjustments.

Lindgren, who has been a reliable presence in net this season, has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. The team's head coach, Spencer Carbery, revealed that Lindgren is expected to be out for at least seven days, which is the minimum required for IR placement.

"We're taking a cautious approach with Charlie's recovery," Carbery explained. "We want to ensure he's fully healed before he returns to the ice."

But here's where it gets controversial: the Capitals had to call up Clay Stevenson from the AHL's Hershey Bears to fill the void left by Lindgren's absence. Stevenson, who made his NHL debut last season, will likely see more playing time during this stint with the Capitals.

"Things have shifted since our initial plans," Carbery acknowledged. "With Lindgren's injury, we have to adapt and give Stevenson an opportunity."

Stevenson has been impressive in the AHL this season, posting a 7-4-0 record with solid numbers. However, the NHL is a different beast, and the pressure will be on him to perform.

And this is the part most people miss: the Capitals' goaltending situation is a delicate balance. Logan Thompson, who has been the team's primary netminder, will continue to shoulder most of the workload. But with Lindgren out, Thompson's backup will be the inexperienced Stevenson.

"It's a challenge, but one we're ready to face," Carbery said. "We believe in our goaltending depth, and Stevenson has shown he can handle the NHL level."

Lindgren's return date is set for December 12th, just in time for the team's trip to play the Winnipeg Jets. Until then, the Capitals will rely on Thompson and Stevenson to keep the team competitive.

So, what do you think? Is Stevenson ready for the NHL spotlight? Or will the Capitals' goaltending depth be tested to its limits? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
