Cole Hutson has etched his name in the history books of the World Juniors by becoming the all-time leading scorer for defensemen from the United States.
After a brief hiatus due to an injury sustained when a puck struck him in the back of the head—an incident that required him to be taken off the ice on a stretcher—Hutson returned to action at the 2026 World Junior Championship. His comeback was dramatic, as he was instrumental in scoring the opening goal for Team USA during their quarterfinal clash against Finland on Friday evening. Following a goalless first period, Hutson ignited the scoreboard just seconds into the second period.
At just 19 years old, this talented defenseman joined an offensive rush and received a well-timed pass from forward Kamil Bednarik near the left circle's edge. With remarkable speed, he unleashed a powerful wrist shot that rang off the post and found its way past Finnish goalie Petteri Rimpinen.
Soon after the Finns equalized, Hutson once again played a pivotal role in regaining the lead for the Americans. While Team USA was on a power play, he expertly handled the puck at the point before maneuvering it into a more advantageous position below the circles in the offensive zone. Rather than simply skating around the net, he delivered a flawless aerial pass right onto the stick of his Boston University teammate, Cole Eiserman.
Eiserman wasted no time and fired a one-timer into the net, putting the team ahead 2-1 with 9:45 left in the second period. This marked Eiserman’s second goal of the tournament, both of which were set up by Hutson.
These plays were historic for Hutson, as he then not only tied but surpassed Erik Johnson’s previous record of 14 points for Team USA defensemen at the World Juniors, achieving a total of 15 points with 4 goals and 11 assists. Additionally, his assist on Eiserman’s goal allowed Hutson to break Ryan Suter’s record of 10 career assists in the tournament.
For context, Hutson’s older brother, Lane Hutson, who plays for the Montreal Canadiens, recorded 10 points (1 goal, 9 assists) in his 14 games over two tournaments with Team USA.

Hutson’s remarkable performance comes on the heels of a serious injury that raised concerns about his ability to continue in the tournament. Reflecting on his experiences, Hutson expressed gratitude as he prepared for the big match on Friday.
"It’s been a tough week for me, filled with a lot of emotions. This could potentially be my last chance to wear the USA jersey. It’s about playing alongside my closest friends, and with everything on the line, this game is crucial," Hutson shared with NHL Network’s Jon Morosi before the game.
He also took a moment to thank everyone who supported him during this challenging time, including the USA Hockey staff, the Washington Capitals organization, and Boston University, acknowledging the numerous messages he received from around the world, which he deeply appreciated.
As of now, Hutson has accumulated four points (1 goal and 3 assists) across three games in this year's tournament. If Team USA secures a victory over Finland, they will advance to the semifinals this coming Sunday.
