Weather Alert: Flooding Expected in Ireland's East and South
Met Éireann has issued an urgent warning for residents in Dublin, Wicklow, and Wexford, with an orange weather alert in place for Friday. Heavy rain is forecast, and the potential for significant flooding is a real concern.
But here's where it gets controversial: the weather service has also issued yellow warnings for rain and wind across multiple counties, including Cork, Kerry, and Limerick. This has sparked debate among locals, with some questioning the severity of the situation.
The National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management (NDFEM) has taken proactive measures, convening a meeting with local authorities and government departments. In a statement, they confirmed that river and surface water flooding is expected in Leinster and Munster due to heavy rain on saturated ground.
The orange warning for the three counties will be in effect from 2 pm on Friday until 11 am on Saturday. Met Éireann warns of significant rainfall, especially on high ground and exposed areas, which will create hazardous travel conditions.
And this is the part most people miss: the forecaster has issued multiple status yellow warnings for other counties, including Cork and Waterford, where heavy rain is expected to lead to flooding and difficult travel. A separate yellow warning covers counties like Dublin and Wicklow, with similar concerns about flooding and poor visibility.
Keith Leonard, national director of NDFEM, has urged the public to be vigilant and follow safety advice. He specifically advised avoiding coastal areas, open riverbanks, and canal paths due to stronger-than-usual water levels and currents.
Mr. Leonard also warned motorists to exercise caution, slow down, and increase stopping distances due to potential hazards. He emphasized the importance of not entering flooded roads and finding alternative routes.
According to Met Éireann, cloud cover will move in from the south on Thursday night, bringing patchy rain and drizzle. Friday will be a wet and windy day across most of the country, with heavy rain and strong northeasterly winds. The driest and brightest weather is expected in Ulster and north Connacht, with temperatures ranging from 8 to 12 degrees.
Saturday is likely to bring drier and brighter weather in the north, while other areas can expect cloud and patchy rain. Sunday will be mainly dry with a mix of cloud and sunny spells, and temperatures ranging from 7 to 11 degrees.
