A bittersweet farewell: Team Visma's top sprinter, Olav Kooij, is moving on. His journey from a young talent to a WorldTour champion is a story of determination and skill.
The Rise of a Champion
Olav Kooij, at just 18 years old, joined Team Visma in 2020, fresh from his junior successes. His impact was immediate, with an impressive start to his professional career. In his first four races, he dominated, securing three wins and a close second place. It was clear that Kooij was a rising star, and his talent was recognized with a pro contract within a year and a half.
But here's where it gets interesting: Kooij's prowess wasn't limited to sprints. He showcased his versatility by excelling in short, explosive climbs. His performance at the 2023 European Championships, where he finished on the VAM-berg and stood alongside his teammates on the podium, is a testament to his all-around ability.
A Career Highlighted by Achievements
Despite not being the primary focus for sprints in the team's Tour de France strategy, Kooij built an impressive palmarès. His wins include three stages at the Giro d'Italia, five at the Tour de Pologne, and an impressive seven at the Tour of Britain. He also secured victories in prestigious one-day races like the Cyclassics Hamburg and Clasica de Almeria.
And this is the part most people miss: Kooij's 2024 schedule was packed with WorldTour races, yet he continued to dominate. He secured a stage win in the UAE Tour and added two more in Paris-Nice. In May, he made his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d'Italia, and in Napoli, he achieved his first Grand Tour stage win, an incredible feat against Jonathan Milan.
A New Chapter
Olav Kooij is now set to join Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale on a three-year deal, reportedly with a lucrative salary. With a fresh leadout and a team of high-level signings, Kooij's future looks bright, and the Tour de France is likely on his radar.
Team Visma bid him farewell, sharing their appreciation for his journey from the development team to the WorldTour.
"From next year, he will be with Decathlon–CMA CGM Team, and we wish him all the best. His rise is an inspiration, and we're proud to have been a part of it."
What do you think? Is Kooij's move a step towards greater success, or is there something to be said about his time with Team Visma? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
