At their Asia Pacific content showcase, Disney+ dropped some major news, including a brand-new original drama and a surprise renewal. The streamer celebrated its impressive collection of acclaimed Korean dramas, and now, it's time to dive into what's next.
But here's where it gets controversial... Disney+ has acquired the rights to the highly anticipated MBC drama, 'Perfect Crown', which is set to premiere globally on the platform in 2026. This drama, starring the talented IU and Byeon Woo-seok, offers a unique twist on the classic royal romance. Set in a modern-day Korea with a constitutional monarchy, it follows Grand Prince Wan, a beloved royal caught in a power struggle. With marriage on the horizon, he enters a convenient arrangement with Heeju, an heiress, but their plan soon unravels, leading to an unexpected and heartwarming journey.
Both leads have been on a roll lately; IU, the K-pop sensation turned actress, recently starred in the Netflix hit 'When Life Gives You Tangerines', while Byeon, the model-turned-actor, wowed audiences in 'Lovely Runner'.
'Perfect Crown', previously known as 'Wife of a 21st Century Grand Prince', has been a hot topic in Korea and is directed by the renowned Park Joon-hwa, known for his work on 'Alchemy of Souls' and 'What's Wrong With Secretary Kim'.
And the surprises don't end there! Disney+ has renewed the prestigious drama 'Made in Korea' for a second season, with production already underway for a 2026 release. This period political drama stars the iconic Hyun Bin and Jung Woo-sung, who received a warm welcome from the Hong Kong audience. The first season will premiere with a special two-episode debut on December 24th.
'Made in Korea' is set in the 1970s and follows the double life of Baek Kitae, a powerful KCIA agent with a thirst for power. As he climbs the ranks, using his smuggling operation to protect his brother and gain influence, he faces an unwavering prosecutor who threatens his path. The series promises an intense battle of wits and power.
Other Korean originals showcased include 'The Manipulated', an action-packed drama starring Ji Chang-wook and Doh Kyung-soo, which is already streaming. There's also 'Battle of Fates', a unique reality competition pitting fortune-tellers against each other, and 'Gold Land', a crime drama with a stellar cast and an 'Oldboy' scribe behind the scenes. Season two of the acclaimed thriller 'A Shop for Killers' is also on the way, with an impressive lineup of stars.
And for anime fans, Disney+ revealed a collaboration with the legendary Hideo Kojima, bringing his groundbreaking game 'Death Stranding' to life as an anime series, 'Death Stranding Isolations', set for release in 2027.
