A Fire Alarm, a Triple Play, and a Whole Lot of Chaos
In a scene that could've been straight out of a movie, Ray's first inning at Scottsdale Stadium was nothing short of extraordinary. Amidst a blaring fire alarm that sent some fans rushing for the exits, Ray pitched through the chaos, walked two batters, and then pulled off an incredible triple play on a base hit. It was a moment that left everyone, including his teammates, in awe and laughter.
"You never know what you're going to get in spring training," Ray later remarked with a smile. And boy, did he hit the nail on the head with that one!
The chaos began as soon as Ray stepped onto the mound. Facing Alex Bregman, the lights suddenly started flashing, and a recorded message repeatedly urged fans to evacuate the ballpark. But Ray, undeterred by the noise, continued pitching, walking Matt Shaw and Bregman before giving up a flare to right field by Seiya Suzuki.
What happened next was a blur of confusion and brilliance. With Shaw seemingly headed home, Rafael Devers cut off the throw, leaving Suzuki stranded at second base. And then, in a twist of fate, Ray witnessed a rare triple play unfold before his eyes.
"I was yelling at [Shaw] to go to second base, and then I saw a guy stuck between second and third. I looked at third base, and the guy was just standing there. I thought, 'I'm going to get two outs,' and then it turned into three!" Ray recalled with a laugh.
At 34 years old and entering his 13th MLB season, Ray admitted to having a vague memory of a similar triple play in the minors. But for the Giants, it's been a long time since they've experienced such a play in a regular-season game, dating back to 2008.
Despite the unusual end to the inning, Ray felt he got the work he needed and was feeling physically strong. He's looking forward to ironing out some mechanical issues in his next bullpen session, but he knows one thing for sure: there's no topping this spring training debut.
"That's enough chaos for one game!" he exclaimed.
