Will King Félix and Cole Hamels Make the Baseball Hall of Fame? (2026)

The Baseball Hall of Fame: Who's In, Who's Out, and Why It Matters

One year ago, the Hall of Fame discussion was straightforward, with clear frontrunners. But now, we're in a different era, and the question of who deserves a spot in Cooperstown is more complex than ever. This year's ballot presents a unique challenge, and it's time to dive in.

Welcome to the 'Comfort Plus' ballot, where voters have more flexibility to champion players who might have been overlooked in the past. But will this lead to more inductees? It's not a given.

I'm still voting for players like Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones, who have strong cases. Beltrán is one of the best switch-hitters ever, and Jones was a defensive powerhouse. However, there's a real possibility that no one will be inducted this year.

As a 'Big Hall' voter, I believe in giving players time to be recognized. Hall of Famer Scott Rolen, who started with a low percentage of votes, proves that deserving players can eventually get their due.

Focusing on the Pitchers: Hernández and Hamels

I've spent a lot of time considering starting pitchers, and two names stand out: Félix Hernández and Cole Hamels.

We know CC Sabathia deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Looking at more modern pitchers, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander seem destined for Cooperstown. But in an era where innings are limited, where do we draw the line?

King Félix's Dominance

Félix Hernández was a dominant force. He finished in the top 10 in Cy Young Award voting six times in seven years, winning the award in 2010. That's a peak performance.

While Hernández had a higher strikeout rate than Sabathia, Sabathia's durability gave him the edge in total innings and strikeouts. Hernández's career ended earlier due to injuries. Had he stayed healthy, he might have played in the playoffs.

Players don't always control their postseason opportunities. The real measure is how they performed in their era. During Hernández's career, only three pitchers had more strikeouts: Verlander, Scherzer, and Hamels.

Hamels: A Similar Career

Cole Hamels' career closely mirrors Hernández's. Their innings and strikeout totals are similar. Hamels has a better ERA+ and a stellar postseason ERA, including MVP honors in 2008.

Jon Lester and Adam Wainwright will be on future ballots, and their October achievements will boost their chances. Hamels deserves the same consideration.

Where Do You Stand?

This year's ballot allows for a more nuanced approach. Hamels and Hernández were among the best pitchers of their time. Do you agree? Who else do you think deserves Hall of Fame consideration? Share your thoughts in the comments!
